Good evening BOOST members! I hope you had a relaxing weekend and was able to share all of the wonderful information you learned from our United Nations tour with your family.  The trip was very informative and everyone was well behaved and attentive.  Great Job!!!
Here is your assignment that is due to your assigned teacher by Friday, 2/3/12.

Pretend you are a travel magazine writer and you are writing an article about your visit to the U.N. In your article include as much information (details) about our visit. How does the United Nations work towards ensuring there is peace around the world?   Think about the process we had to go through just to get into the building, the 5 parts that make up the United Nations for example.   Also, include your personal reflection of the the trip. Ms. Brown and myself are looking forward to reading your responses. Make sure you email and post here on our blog.

    Project B.O.O.S.T. Assignment

Task: As we prepare for our first trip on January 27, 2012, we need to gain some background knowledge on the United Nations. Our theme for the year is Peacemakers Then and Now and the U.N. is a great place to begin our journey.
Go to the website www.visit.un.org, and go on a mini scavenger hunt to find the answers to the following questions.

    1. How many countries (states) belong to the United Nations?
    2. When a visitor walks through the entrance of the U.N. they have left American soil and have entered what kind of territory?
    3. When was the United Nations created?
    4. What is the name of UN Secretary General and what country is he/she from?
    5. Explain the purpose of the United Nations.
    6. Create 2 questions you would like to ask our tour guide, as a result of exploring the United Nations website.

The answers to these questions are to be submitted to both Ms. Brown and Ms. Haigler via email on or before Monday, January 23, 2012.

Every time answer a question right on the web site u donate rice to people in need. My favorite part of the United Nations was when we sat down and learned about the people and kids who have no food and hat they give then to eat and drink. also i learned that they gave then special peanut butter to eat. for the first trip i thought it was amazing.

  4. I loved the trip! I learned so much. www.freerice.com is so fun. I made a account and I have donated about 1,900 grains of rice. I am learning new things and getting reviews on some things. The United Nations is amazing. If this is the first trip and it was that amazing, I can't wait for the next trips!

  6. Nobel Peace Prize

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born October 21, 1833, in Stockholm, Sweden, the fourth son of Immanuel and Caroline Nobel. His invention of dynamite in 1867 established his fame worldwide, and he built more than ninety factories that manufactured explosives and ammunition. In his will of 1895, Nobel created a fund for the awarding of five annual prizes "to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." In 1969, a sixth award in economics was added.

"The Ig Nobel Prizes honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative -- and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology." Even though the Ig Nobel Prize is not related to the Nobel Prize, I included it here because their website is fun to browse and it provides a glimpse into the real world of science. Some of the research done by this year's winners includes why woodpeckers don't get headaches, and why dry spaghetti often breaks into more than two pieces when bent.
If you are doing a report on a Nobel Laureate, the Nobel Prize Internet Archive is a terrific resource. In addition to an archive of winners sorted by year and subject, each winner's bio page includes a list of related links. "If you have an interesting and useful Internet link about a particular Nobel Laureate, you can add your link instantly to that Laureate's home page here at the Archive. We encourage you to add links as often as you like. The educational value of this Archive depends on contributions and resourcefulness its users."
The official Nobel Prize site is my pick of the day because it is not at all stuffy or pretentious, and really makes the work of the winners come alive. My favorite section is Educational Games, which houses dozens of fun, interactive activities based on the work of Prize winners. Other site highlights are Nobel Laureates Facts (only thirty-three women have won the coveted award) and Internet TV with interviews and lectures by the Laureates.
